Lingfield Reserve - Birdbox Locations and Usage

In Spring 2011, a number of new bird-boxes were built and erected around the reserve, with several different design templates being used in order to target specific species. It is the case though, that some bird species use boxes more readily than others and so we are not surprised to find that it is mainly Blue and Great Tits which have used the boxes so far.

The method of surveying the nest-boxes is two-fold - in late Spring, attempts are made to see adult birds carrying food in for nestlings, and when the nestboxes are cleaned out in Autumn, and it is sometimes possible to identify which species have been using the box by reference to feathers etc.
