Welcome to the web-site of the Lingfield Nature Reserves. We hope that you enjoy browsing our web-site and, even more, that you enjoy looking around our nature reserves, which are only the 2nd village-based reserve in the country to be awarded LNR (Local Nature Reserve) status by English Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reserves occupy a 26-acre site and are a mixture of meadows, hedges, and woodland copses and also boast a wetland area with a number of ponds and small pools, an orchard, a wildflower meadow and a butterfly garden. The reserves are managed in such a way as to gain maximum benefit for the flora and fauna, with increased biodiversity very much in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Management and administration of the reserves is undertaken by a team of volunteers and, as such, we are always on the look-out for a bit more help – both in terms of expertise and manpower. If you are interested in helping to look after this wonderful local resource, why not come along to our regular work parties, which are usually held once a month, and if you have any particular knowledge of any aspect of wildlife or habitat management, we would be particularly interested in hearing from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Access to the reserves is free and open to all, and a network of both hard-standing and grass paths makes it suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are approx. 10.6 hectares (26 acres) available to visit free. Various leaflets are available giving maps showing the layout of the Nature Reserves, access points, the location of the Butterfly and Quiet Gardens, the Community Orchard, the Millennium pond and the larger open meadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We already hold a number of annual events but we also have regular visits from the local schools, the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and Beavers, Cubs and Scouts youth groups and local Youth Clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Group visits are organised for both young people and adults. Perhaps to walk the tree trail, for nature walks, pond dipping sessions, litter picks, as an outdoor classroom, etc. We understand such visits by younger children can be part of the science and geography requirement of the primary curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, we get as many as 100 visitors who join in a seed identification hunt, wildflower planting, National Tree Week and other open air events. Other organizations use the Nature Reserves to hold their own events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regular monthly work parties, usually on Sunday mornings, are held when volunteers help with the care of trees and hedges, etc. required to keep these Reserves well maintained for the benefit of our many visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although there are no facilities on the actual Nature Reserves, it is possible to make arrangements to hire the local Scout hall owned by the Lingfield youth groups. This substantial heated hall has toilets (for both sexes), a simple kitchen and is of a good size to hold workshops or provide an indoor venue. It is conveniently situated close to the Millennium Pond and, being off road behind the fire station in Saxbys Lane, makes a good meeting point, particularly for delivering and collecting children.
